Specifics of communication of people with dementia

The thesis deals with the issue of communication of people with Alzheimer's disease. It's aim is to describe and assess - on the base of a case study of four married couples - what changes in communication may occur due to Alzheimer's disease, what supportive and new communication strategies may be used by the carers and their relatives, whether they were offered professional counselling on communication and whether they would welcome speech therapy. A semi-structured interview method was chosen to obtain relevant data. The data were analysed using an open coding method followed by categorisation. They are presented in a case study designs. Communication changed for all couples, always in a different form and extent. The changes affected all linguistic levels, with the most significant variations occurring on the lexical-semantic and pragmatic levels, and to a lesser extent on the morphological- syntactic and phonetic-phonological levels. The use of supportive communication strategies and aids was observed in a small extent, more like a natural complement to communication. Professional counselling proved to be sufficient, perhaps because all respondents use the service of the Alzheimer Point counselling team.
